Bespoke Black Care Training for The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham’s Aspire Virtual School Designated Teachers Network

On Wednesday 17th November 2021, I delivered Bespoke Black Care Training to The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham’s Aspire Virtual School Designated Teachers Network, with a focus on understanding the challenges of those who are Black and in Care in their School and how to help improve their Outcomes.

Here’s what the Designated Teachers and the Aspire Virtual School had to say about this practical and interactive Training session:

“The breakout rooms were fantastic and the timing was perfect... Never thought we could talk so much on one incident that long and we were interrupted. The additional comments from actual school experience you presented added extra advise to DTs to take more proactive approach. Race and identity plays a big factor on the emotional needs of young people. Your emphasis brings focus to what is usually ignored as a banter. The cricket phenomenon happening this week is a good example.

Hearing from care experienced professional has that extra gravitas and feels real than coming from professionals talking because it is their job”

“Very informative regarding the experiences of young people”

“Very relevant to a situation we are in at the moment”

“It gave me insight into experiences that are not my own”

“The examples, experience and tips shared were informative and very inspirational”

“Named some of the additional layers of black Children in care. challenged schools to look at their response from a child's viewpoint”

“The training provided us with information and strategies to use in school. It was good to have the opportunity to discuss with professionals”

“It focused on the specific challenges that children from ethnic communities face and gave teachers from different schools/ age ranges an opportunity to discuss different approaches within the presented scenarios. It was thought provoking”

“This training was informative inspirational and powerful”

“This was a really insightful training session. I liked how direct it was and it was great to converse with other DTs to share our understanding and practice”

“Input from the speaker and the colleagues involved. Challenged me and refocused our reasons for what we do to support all our students”

“It was a great presentation and training. I really enjoyed the breakout rooms with discussions of scenarios. The images were powerful”

“The case studies raised questions and thoughts for further reflection”

“Very powerful and informative”

“Thought provoking! It is good to be provoked”

“I would recommend this training to all DTS. There is the opportunity to discuss, share good practice and research /explore further”

“Clear and informative with plenty of time for discussion and feedback”

“It was useful to hear other people's experiences of supporting black children and young people”

“Time seems always against us however this training is critical in understand our care experienced students”

“Honest, and open discussions, which allow you to listen to the views of others, and to also be able to listen to approaches other agencies use. Lots of self reflection and how we can improve the outcomes for our young people here at Sydney Russell. Real life experiences are always thought provoking”
