Nothing in Your Journey is Wasted

Before being placed in Care, I had aspirations of becoming a Lawyer after watching TV programmes Rumpole of The Bailey, LA Law and Ally McBeal.

There was something about speaking up for justice that caused me to believe I can do that.

Placed in Care at age 9, my journey consisted of school and college exclusions and a run in with the Law, but I held on to my ambition of one day working in the Legal Sector, even when some of my Teachers at Secondary School told me that my ambition would be impossible, because they only saw my behaviour and didn’t notice my potential.

Leaving School with little to no GCSE’s, at College I was able to navigate my way through Functional Skills and A Level Law, then move on to the University of Derby and gain a Bachelor’s Degree in Law and move on to study at The College of Law in York, where I passed all of my assignments and assessments but didn’t pass the written exams by 2 points at 2 attempts. I also had work experience in Conveyancing Law and paid employment with a Criminal Law firm.

But there’s a saying that says

‘Nothing is wasted’.

In 2013 purpose called and I embarked on the Entrepreneurial Journey of setting up my company The Transformed You to provide an Intervention and Support Service for Children and Young People who experience the Care System, Mentoring them to see and believe that with the right support their dreams and aspirations are possible, and the skills I developed in the Legal Sector serve to help me Advocate on their behalf and teach them how to respectfully have their voice heard.

Now coming full circle, on Thursday 11th July 2024, I was honoured to be asked by Lucy Barnes who is also Care Experienced and the Co Founder and CEO at Lawyers Who Care to help train and share insight to Lawyers on how to mentor Care Experienced people who have aspirations of becoming a Lawyer.

And so to the Lawyers I met on Thursday THANK YOU for taking this step

To Lucy Barnes,  Kate Aubrey-Johnson and Gemma Creamer THANK YOU for creating this space.

And to Care Experienced aspiring Lawyers and Care Experienced people who have aspirations to be in each and every sector, believe me when I say, with the right support your dreams and aspirations are indeed possible and when purpose calls, nothing in your journey will be wasted.
